The Contemporary Art Guru
Tomas Redrado studied and planned for a career in Diplomacy in Buenos Aires, but the year he graduated, COVID hit Argentina. The government took extreme measures to keep people from leaving their homes. During the lockdown, Tomas learned that several of his artist friends needed to sell their works to have income to survive. And so began his unlikely career as an art dealer and eventual gallery owner.
Today he spends time between art shows in Argentina and his art gallery, Tomas Redrado Art, located in North Miami. We recently attended the opening of the exhibit “Montes No Visibles” showcasing the work of international artists: Julia Retzwho uses “caucho”, a natural rubber, to cover architectural models of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier; Peruvian Andrea Ferrero, currently a resident at @fountainheadarts, makes delicate architectural sculptures entirely of chocolate; and Colombian Henry Palacio who uses ordinary materials like soup alphabet letters to create powerful messages about society.
A few years ago it was unheard of to have a successful opening during the summer inMiami. Still, several galleries primarilyin Little Haiti and Allapattah now have exhibits throughout the year.
Watch our interview to hear Tomas talk about the contemporary art scene in BuenosAires, why he was comfortable opening a gallery in Miami and his favorite places in Little Haiti and Allapattah.
